Book Review: 'When Thoughts Invade the Cancer Conqueror' by S Nilakanta Siva and Rajalakshmi Siva

Cancer is one of the dreaded diseases that have haunted us often and it continues to. Any sort of cancer it is, it brings fear and depression onto the affected person's mind. ‘When Thoughts Invade the Cancer Conqueror’ is such a book that provides insight into such atrocities one goes through after being affected by such a frightening disease.

The book looks to me as an explanation of a cancer affected person called Kuppuswamy and how he tackles it with the help of industrious and faithful doctors. Sometimes the narration by the author drives you out of the serious subject discussed by introducing light elements. The book eulogizes medical doctor’s profession. It brings to the fore that apart from the corrupt and double minded doctors there are still a few who still take their profession seriously doing every bit to act at times as God saving someone’s life.

The cover so to say is not that attractive, the language is purely refined for scientific minds although at times you find certain grammatical inconsistencies. The authors have done a splendid job with all the research in this field given that the author S Nilakanta himself was a victim of cancer. The authors have narrated the story with the help of a few techniques like, inter-textualization; wherein they have included poems and so on from literary giants like, Macaulay, Tennyson and Shakespeare.

Cancer is certainly a deadly disease and one ought to have that patience and prudence to deal with such disease. Although the book narrates this incidence, it brings to light that the protagonist was a well to do personality or had varied litany of doctors around him to deal with his case. The book can be of help to students who are pursuing their studies in this line. But as per my observation it doesn’t resolve how one who doesn’t have the required resources would deal with this traumatic disease. Nevertheless, in what the authors have tried, they have drawn home the point, that it is not easy to handle this disease and at the same time it is not impossible.
